How did your interest in art begin?
In my early years I was primarily a figurative artist . . . very interested in portraits. I had a copy of an illustrated version of the epic Argentine poem Martín Fierro, which inspired me to draw it's characters, the bearded centaurs of the Pampas… When did the more abstract style appear in your art? In my twenties I was still working figuratively, but began to introduce more "abstraction" by stylizing my subject matters. I also took a deep interest in the works of Miró, of Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky and many others… which opened so many possibilities. Your first drawings were done in charcoal pencil... I love working in charcoal...there's a sort of a starkness, a discipline on a basic creative level that I like. Lately I've returned to work in charcoal pencil... And lately? Assemblages ... sculptural constructions made with found objects. I'll see something on the ground - a fallen tree branch, a rusty nail, an animal bone and then I combine them. It takes a lot of time and work. |
